What do you buy a newborn who already has everything?
Share
Buying for a new baby sounds easy until you realise their parents have already bought most of what they need.
There are clothes in the drawers, blankets folded in the nursery and probably a few soft toys waiting patiently for their new owner. You still want to bring something, but you’d like it to feel a bit more personal.
You don’t need to find something nobody else has thought of. Sometimes an everyday gift, chosen with a little care, is the one that means the most.
Start with something they’ll use
A personalised baby blanket is a lovely place to start, especially if you know the colours the parents like.
If you’re unsure, take your cue from what they’ve already chosen for the baby. Do they tend to go for soft neutrals, pinks and blues, or a bit more colour? You don’t have to match the whole nursery. Choosing something that feels like their style is enough.
Adding the baby’s name gives a practical present a personal touch. It’s still a blanket they can use, with a little reminder of who it was chosen for.
You don’t have to buy newborn clothing
Tiny clothes are hard to resist. But if the family has already received plenty, choosing a larger size gives them something to put away for later.
Check the sizing on the individual item, and think about the season the baby is likely to wear it in. A thick sweater won’t get much wear if it fits in the middle of summer.
If you’re not sure, it’s completely fine to ask the parents what size they need. The gift can still be a surprise.
A named bunny makes a lovely smaller gift
Not every baby gift needs to be a big gift set.
A soft bunny embroidered with the baby’s name is a lovely option on its own. You could also pair it with a book and write a message inside the cover.
That handwritten note is worth doing. It doesn’t need to be elaborate. A few words welcoming the baby, and the date you gave the gift, can mean a lot when the family looks back at it later.
Keep the personalisation simple
You don’t need to include every birth detail for a gift to feel special.
A first name may be all you want on a blanket or bunny. For a teddy with a larger embroidery area, you might choose a name and date, or a birth-details design.
Before ordering, double-check the spelling with the parents or their birth announcement. It’s especially worth checking hyphens, middle names and any accents.
And if the name hasn’t been announced?
Wait if you can. There’s no rule that says a personalised gift has to arrive before the baby does.
If you’d rather give something straight away, a gift card lets the parents choose the colour, style and personalisation themselves.
