Baby’s First Christmas Gift Ideas That Feel Personal
Share
A baby’s first Christmas can involve a lot of presents for someone who is quite happy playing with the wrapping paper.
If you’re buying for your own baby, a grandchild or a new niece or nephew, you probably want something you’ll be glad you kept. That might be a Christmas teddy that comes out with the decorations each year, or a blanket with their name on it that gets used long after December.
Here are a few first Christmas gift ideas, depending on what you’d like the gift to be.
A Christmas teddy to bring out each December
A personalised Christmas teddy is a good choice if you want to mark the occasion itself. You can include the baby’s name and year using the options on your chosen design, then keep it with the family’s Christmas things.
I like the idea of taking a photo with the same teddy every Christmas. The teddy stays the same while the child beside it gets bigger.
For a traditional bear, Tinsel the Cream Christmas Tummi Bear wears a Santa hat and has a tummy panel for your chosen embroidery. There are also reindeer, snowman, gingerbread and elf characters in the Tummi Bear collection if you’d prefer something a little different.
Check the age guidance and care details for the individual toy before choosing. You can also give a teddy as a keepsake to display until the child is old enough to play with it.
A named blanket they can use beyond Christmas
If you’d rather give something for everyday use, a personalised baby blanket doesn’t need a Christmas design to make a thoughtful Christmas present.
Choose a colour the parents like and add the baby’s name. You can put the Christmas date and your message in the card, leaving the blanket itself simple.
This is a useful option if the family already has plenty of festive outfits and decorations. Think about what they own before choosing the size, too. If they have several smaller blankets, they may appreciate a larger one for later.
If you’re unsure about the different styles, my baby blanket guide goes through sizes, knits and embroidery choices.
A bunny and a book with a message inside
A personalised bunny paired with a book makes a simple gift from grandparents, an aunty, an uncle or a godparent.
You could choose a Christmas story to read together each December, or a childhood favourite you’d like to pass on. Write a few words inside the cover before wrapping it: who it’s from, the year and why you chose that book.
The bunny doesn’t have to be Christmas-themed. A colour that suits the family’s taste will work just as well, especially if you want it to be part of everyday play when the child reaches the toy’s recommended age.
Something practical for their first summer
Christmas in Australia also means summer holidays, family visits and plenty of changes to the usual routine. A personalised hooded towel is worth considering if the parents would appreciate a useful gift.
Look at the measurements and intended use on the product page so you choose a towel that suits the baby now or gives them room to grow.
Clothes can work too, but check the size with the parents first. If you’re buying ahead, think about the season when the baby will actually fit into them. A winter knit in the next size up may be more useful than another newborn outfit.
If you’re buying for someone else’s baby
It’s fine to ask what they need. You can still keep the colour or design a surprise.
For a personalised gift, confirm the spelling of the name rather than relying on memory. And if several family members are shopping, a quick check with each other can save everyone buying the same thing.
You don’t need to put together a large hamper. One carefully chosen gift and a handwritten card are enough.
Leave time for personalisation and delivery
I embroider Embroida gifts in my Western Sydney studio. Production times vary between items, so check the product page and allow time for postage after your order is made.
If your family celebrates early or you’re travelling before Christmas, plan around the date you need the gift in your hands.
You can browse the personalised Christmas collection for festive keepsakes, or choose an everyday gift and make it theirs with their name.
